Four escape from prison in Guyana

Preliminary reports indicate that the men broke their way out of the prison by cutting the floor board.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A massive manhunt involving police and soldiers continued Sunday after four prisoners, including two murder accused, escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison. Law enforcement officials said that Kevin “Long Hair” Narine, 32; Rickford La Fleur, 35; Vijay Seenarine, 33; and Vinood Gopual, 19, may have escaped during the early hours of Saturday . 

“Preliminary reports indicate that the men broke their way out of the prison by cutting the floor board and wending their way through the double floor and exited from the Northern Part of the prison. They subsequently scaled the prison fence and made good their escape,” said a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

La Fleur and Gopual had been on remand on murder charges, while Narine had been sentenced to nine years in prison for armed robbery. Seenarine had been remanded to prison on a charge of carnal knowledge.

The police believe that the men may be heading to Suriname, since one of them is reported to have relatives in the Dutch speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country. CMC/pr/cfe/11
