The 58th edition of the Caribbean Baseball Series, held in the Dominican Republic, has left a storm in the largest of the Caribbean islands, a hurricane of opinions on the national sport, turning it into an epilogue after the tournament ended. And if discussing baseball was always a mark of identity here, now – actually for a long time – those controversies go beyond the sports sphere.


Padura: academician of the language in Puerto Rico

The Cuban novelist and another two figures of Latin American literature were deserving of this category that will soon become official.

Cuban writer Leonardo Padura and his colleagues Sergio Ramírez, from Nicaragua, and Antonio Skarmeta, from Chile, have just been extolled as Corresponding Members of the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language, “in view of their literary and intellectual merits and the interest and solidarity” that the three have demonstrated “for Puerto Rico’s literary and cultural affairs,” according to the official press release by the president of that institution, Puerto Rican poet José Luis Vega.

Twenty-five years is a young age for a person, but it has another connotation when it’s about a character that lives in the pages of books. And in 2016 the indescribable, disturbing and popular Mario Conde, the main character – until now – of eight of Leonardo Padura’s novels, is precisely turning 25 in a cycle that we will try to tour in a very tight way.
