El reciente cónclave de la Asociación de Estudios Latinoamericanos (LASA, por sus siglas en inglés), en San Juan, Puerto Rico, registró cifras que rebasaron sus anteriores convocatorias: más de 5.500 participantes que intervinieron en un programa con más de 1.200 paneles en solo cuatro días, del 27 al 30 de mayo último.
Una nueva tendencia gana espacio en el cine cubano: los relatos de baja intensidad dramática.
Hay tres tendencias mayoreando en el cine cubano. Dos pertenecen a la tradición y resultan de evoluciones o involuciones (según sea el caso particular de la obra) de los discursos maestros del cine institucional. Una, la alegoría nacional –La obra del siglo (Carlos Machado, 2015), La nube (Marcel Beltrán, 2013)-, explora las refracciones de la Historia a través de estructuras donde hay una radiación simbólica de fondo. Su motivo predilecto de los últimos tiempos es el cuerpo de la familia como alegoría de la nación.

Difficult but necessary solutions.
An old friend, who has been close to me since the days of primary school and whose luck in life has been erratic, has warned me: “Don’t go out with that chain around your neck…. To steal it someone can jab you.” In the Havana language of today a jab is a stab on one side of the thorax. The chain in question, though it is gold, has very fine links and belonged to my mother, who inherited it from her mother, and which she wanted to give me in the already faraway days in which I started my senior high studies and I became an “adult.” Since then I have always worn it like my talisman, as a sign of my identity and of the material connection with my mother’s love: it has been with me in those sugar cane cutting stints with which I started practicing my then recently acquired adulthood, during my time at the university, throughout the endless year I spent in Angola as a war correspondent, during the trips I have later made inside and outside the island; always with me for more than 40 years. I know I’m thinking whether I should continue wearing it or not: if it’s worth being attacked, wounded, for being deprived of an object whose value is more symbolic and spiritual than material.
Aunque en el primer semestre de 2015 se reiteran dificultades en actividades claves como el transporte, daños por la sequía e importaciones mayores, por primera vez en varios años el PIB ha crecido en la proporción planificada por el gobierno.
La economía cubana se anotó como punto principal en el primer semestre un crecimiento en torno a la cifra prevista por el gobierno para el 2015. Después de varios años consecutivos con resultados inferiores a los planificados, el producto interno bruto (PIB) avanzó más de un 4 por ciento al cierre de junio, según el informe presentado por el ministro de Economía y Planificación, Marino Murillo, ante una reunión del Consejo de Ministros. En su opinión, el país está en condiciones para terminar bien el año, “pero tenemos que seguir trabajando duro”.
